I am looking at new schedules for South Hills Village and Library via Overbook dated 3/25/12. There may not be Shannon short turns because there is no way to turn it back but there is service past Shannon via Overbrook.
What isn't happening is the service through Dormont to South Hills Village no longer exists. You have to get off the Red Line car (old 42/38) at Castle Shannon and walk 400 to 500 feet to catch the Blue line car if you live in Mt. Lebanon or Dormont and want to go to the mall.
Hardly rapid transit ... That I will agree with. Cars are governed for 30 mph and run mostly at 25. Fitzgerald and Palmer must be rolling over in their graves in anguish. Wonder if the highway lobby got to them and demanded that they not exceed what you can do on route 88!

> While in Pittsburgh, Pa. earlier today to ride the new 1.2 mile, 2 station LRT North Shore Connector, I noted that LRT service to Penn Station has been halted as of 3/26/12 when the new line opened. The Penn Station spur served the Amtrak/PRR station and was built on the former PRR alignment that connected the station to the Panhandle Bridge for trains to/from Cincinnati, St; Louis, etc. The Spur in recent years was used only for a few peak trips on weekdays, and has not been abandoned but the station is barricaded. Also eliminated 3/26 was scheduled LRT service via Overbrook. The original Gateway station, which also had an underground turning loop from the PCC era, is disconnected and replaced by a sharp turn to the new line and platform, leaving Pittsburgh as one of a handful of cities with an abandoned subway platform/line. Both the Red and Blue Line timetables were reissued 3/26, check website at Port Authority.org for details.
