Attached is a photo I took of NKP sister Berkshire 747 westbound at Ashtabula, Ohio on July 7, 1957.  The freight cars are on the high bridge over the Ashtabula River. 

  

1957 was the last year for NKP big steam.  After that summer many of the Berkshires were stored at Conneaut, Ohio as back-up power, but they were never needed again.  Most of the remaining NKP steam locomotives were scrapped at Aspinwall, Pa. in 1962.

Only once did I see one of those critters running. Â  It was a on a High Iron fantrip on the CNJ to Scranton. Â  Track was so bad that on the return south toward Allentown the coupler knuckles slid apart, the train pulled in two and it torpedoed into emergency. 

I had made plans in 1956 or 1957 to go to Bellevue, Ohio with friends to chase the Berks on the Nickel Plate and my father proceeded to tell me every place I had been in the last six months and then told me that I was going to spend that weekend studying. Â  Well, I don't think I studied but I sure didn't go to Ohio.
