White gas buses were also a legendary schtinkwagens as those Fitzohn's that Brentwood owned.  

Strange that I do not recall the same problem with the ACFs and ACF-Brills here in Lancaster.  Perhaps it was a maintenance issue?  Conestoga Transportation Company won Bus Transportation magazine's annual award for maintenance excellence several years in a row in the early 1950s for its size class.   Among the large companies that took home the prize was St. Louis Public Service.   

All through the 1950s I never saw a CTC bus being towed back to the garage.   By the middle 1960s it was a different story.  Money had run out.
