The content of the email was eaten by ecartis. i understand why. in
the meantime, have that email:
A friend notified me that their parents will be selling their Nikon
LS5000 ED when they finish scanning their own slides. I believe it has
an auto feeder as well. My friend said that his parents will call me
when their ready to sell it, but I don't know when exactly that will be
or what they'll ask for it at the moment.
I'm probably jumping the gun a bit, but I decided to toss together a
computer in NewEgg as a wishlist. My goal was to have 2 1-TB hard disks
and to keep it as cheap and expandable as possible. Hard drives are
terribly expensive right now, however. In another quarter they're
expect to drop to where they were before (half the price currently).
The motherboard and case support 6 hard disks total. As for backups, I
was originally thinking of having two of these machines, but since DVDs
(100pk of 4.7GB disks is $25) and DVD burners ($17) are cheap, I figured
that since the actual images themselves won't change often they could
just be burned to DVDs in duplicate. Any database we have would be
small enough to fit on a flash drive (4GB for $5), again on duplicate
media.
Another option for the monitor is to buy it second hand. I know there
is a computer goodwill that has them in the southside. Since I want to
be able to support this many disks in the future, I'm not sure I could
find a computer that would fit the needs I laid out there.
The discussion last time the list talked about slide scanners
essentially (and rightly) came down to money and time. I also don't know
what the procurement procedures are for the museum.
I could probably throw a little bit into the pot, but not enough to
cover even just the compuer. I'm not sure what others would be willing
to pitch in or if this email is just moot.
Again, I'm not sure how much my friend's parents want to sell the
scanner for or if it'd be adventurous to donate it and use it as a tax
write off (possible, right?) I just wanted to toss around the idea to
even see if it was amiable.
As for time for people to come and scan, I could feasibly donate a
weekend a month at the least. (I also need to get back to the library
and start reading old newspapers again).
