There seem to be three issues all tangled together.
1) Derrick's list processor removes all attachments, copies them to storage
on his machine, inserts a link to the copy. Anyone who is not adverse to
following links can see the pictures, read the attached files, and so on.
Some folks are adverse.
2) Many e-mail client programs, that is, the programs each of us use to send
e-mail, like to set up a copy of the message in Hyper Text Markup Language
or Rich Text Format and send that as an attachment. That allows all sorts of
colorful effects, animations, music, and general cuteness. Those get saved
but not transmitted, see 1 above.
3) Many folks on this list do not delete extraneous material. They simply
type a reply at the top of the message and send everything they received
along with their 2 or 3 line contribution. Thus, messages tend to grow and
grow and...
This last is not something Derrick can do anything about or rather, doing
something about it runs the risk of deleting meaningful quotes. You, each
one, _can_ do something about it. Namely, before you click on "send" delete
crap which doesn't need to accompany your messages.
It might be a nice gesture also to look around and see if there is a setting
for "plain text only" or some such in your e-mail client. Using it will
eliminate a lot of the html or Rich Text attachments, save bandwidth on the
internet, and save wear and tear on Derrick's system.
As to following links to see pictures, do what you want. If refraining from
clicking on links gives you a feeling of security, by all means refrain.
"There is none so blind as he who will not see" they tell me.
