In the late 1940's my uncle (who worked for West Penn Power ) lived on Greencrest Drive, near Brookline Blvd. and a short distance  east of the route 39 loop. Besides the trolley rides there, another attraction was to go upstairs at night to watch the orange glow in the sky as slag was being dumped in West Mifflin near highway Rt. 51.
