Not the best example to use. Eurostar has the same issues that airlines do so the advertised station to station time is not the time one must allot for the trip. And how much of the countryside do you see from the inside of the Chunnel?
But in general I definitely agree with you—if I have the time. And trains in Europe that operate within the Schengen countries and/or Switzerland are a delight and lacking the nasty formalities to which airlines and Eurostar subject one.

I love it Bob.
But then the airlines have been screwing themselves for years by failing to simply raise prices as costs went up. Yes, before anyone jumps on me, I understand that their fuel costs have gone up but consumption of fuel has gone way down … same thing has happened with our own cars. But if we simply adjust for inflation, that $104 super saver fare from Baltimore to Los Angeles that I bought in 1973 should be $515 today. No, I am not going on line to hunt it. A lot of the fares have not kept up. Instead they nickle and dime you to death by charging for a coke, or a pillow or your luggage … and then force you to check the bags so they can make more money … all so they can advertise fictitious low prices.
Remember my story about how London to Paris used to be an eight hour train ride? Now it is something like 130 minutes but the air lines, with time wasted getting to the terminal, going through security, checking backs, etc., is probably closer to four hours.
At 30,000 feet, you see clouds and have horrid TV dinners. At ground level there are so many delightful places to eat … that Ukrainian in Manitoba who wants to serve his kind of food, the Hopi Indian in Arizona, the true / authentic Mexican restaurant in West Texas, the Korean restaurant near Seattle. I'll stick to the ground and get fatter and enjoy it.

Plus the car was more comfortable than coach and I di dn't have to pay at least $100 to check our bags, and then pay for a rental car in Pittsburgh.
