Why should I be surprised?
Of course the miners were not enlightened because they did not want to be killed by the coal companies who chose not to follow safety rules.
And the mine owners were were probably also more than a little bit guilty of attempting to use Italians and Polish and other eastern Europeans as slaves …. not much different from the blacks in the southeastern states. I recall one story that came out of the coal fields in Cambria county which was told to me by a former boss whose father worked as mine boss for Bethlehem Mines. There story that Dave passed on to me was that there had been an accident in mine and the first question asked by the superiors was, "Did you get the ponies out?" The live stock cost money to replace; human beings were apparently considered expendable.
