I have a couple of connections to Fred Rogers. When I lived on Spring Hill our next door neighbor was Norb Nathanson.  He was an early volunteer at WQED-TV when it went on the air in 1954, and later produced TV programs. In 1954 he also illustrated Fred's 72-page book titled "Our Small World" (that was the was the name of Fred Rogers' TV Neighborhood program at that time). I have a copy of the book which includes a map of the Neighborhood showing the castle and a trolley line. I am still in contact with Norb who went on to New York Public Television and last year wrote an autobiography that includes his experiences at WQED. Attached is a 1970's photo taken on the Mr. Rogers set - I'm holding our son, and our daughter is sitting on the stool.
The other connection: my wife taught Fred Rogers' children in the 1960's and 70's.

Sounds like the Charlie Dengler picture of 4398 before it was rebuilt as a high speed car.

This is about as far as you can get from trolleys, isn't it!!!  :<)   Well, maybe not because Fred Rogers always included them on his show.   Perhaps that came about because some of his earlier shows were created in Toronto and they had cars when he did them.  I think Fred Rogers was probably one of those school teachers who genuinely liked kids and found another outlet to help kids rather than teach in the public schools in the Pittsburgh area … I think it was Wilkinsburg, wasn't it?

I never met him but I did meet the chap who is carrying on the dream.    Of course the grinning bald guy with the left over chopsticks in the pocket is moi … David Newell is the guy who played Mr. Speedy Delivery on Fred Rogers and now puts together Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood.
