When PAT abandoned streetcar route 55 East Pgh-Homestead, via 2nd Avenue, they replaced it with bus route 56B, which continued to follow the same route as the streetcar. That route being 2nd avenue, across the Glenwood Bridge, then through West Homestead on 8th avenue and on through Homestead to the Rankin Bridge, thru Braddock to East Pittsburgh.

While waiting for a bus early this year on 8th Avenue near the Homestead High Level Bridge, a gentleman asked me what bus ran on down 8th avenue - in bound - past the High Level Bridge and onward to the Glenwood Bridge. It dawned on me at that moment: PAT no longer has any routes that follow that path. They ALL leave and enter Homestead using the Homestead High Level -Homestead Grays Bridge. As I drive to and from that area, I see absolutely NO bus stop signs in that area.

I did a search on Google News Archive http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=gL9scSG3K_gC&dat=19630831&b_mode=2&hl=en

to see if I could find out when and why PAT discontinued that service, and found nothing. It is a rather LONG stretch and there certainly are homes and businesses that are located between the Glenwood and High Level Bridges.

Anyone know?

Thanks,
Matt
