[PRCo] Pittburgh Railway Company Map Draft

I uploaded my latest DRAFT of the Pittsburgh Railway Co. lines exported to
Google Maps...

This is the rest of the electric lines in southwestern PA including the West
Penn. There are missing sections where I have not had the time to research
the exact route (in the case of lines going connecting with Ohio and WV some
were not uploaded because of folder limitations in Google Maps).

I have not worked on these maps in quite a while. It started out as an
attempt simply to trace the lines from old maps. It was one of my early
projects as I experimented with how to manage digital mapping. As I did more
research, I added documentation and began to separate out the lines from
different time periods and routes. Google Maps has many limitations, so it
is not possible to create a single map that shows a large area over time
easily. If you scroll through the layer list you will find some time or
route based folders. Google Maps limits the number of folders and
paths/points per map so not all of my research was imported.
Blaine tells me that part 2 of the CERA Pittsburgh Railways book has been
delayed. It would be nice to have an updated map for that book. If anyone
would like to help update the map, we can think through the best way to
manage and document multiple people making changes. My long term goal is to
get the entries into a true geographic database that can be easily tied to
the documented research and displayed online. Since I am doing this for
steam railroads as well as electric lines for all of Ohio and Pennsylvania
(and to a lesser extent surrounding states) it is life time project.
Fortunately digital mapping technology is improving all the time. I have
been so busy scanning and organizing maps and other documentation, I haven't
had time to work that into the digital route tracings and imports to Google
Maps recently. Maybe this winter ;-)
