[PRCo] slide scanning

That was the situation with the slides I contributed to Ed Ridolph's two PRC
books. But they did a decent job of restoring the slides.

I thought Morning Sun insisted on scanning everything themselves or at their
own vendor. My comments below were for black & white images. The best I can
do for color slides is 4800 with my Microtek, but I typically still use the
Nikon at 4000.

We've never allowed Morning Sun to use our material because they slice open
the slide mount to remove the film for scanning, then reassemble as best
they can, with non-archival tape covering the incision. Ed Miller did, and a
number of the slides are a mess because of it.

Good points, Ed, but some large rail book publishers like Morning Sun
request (demand) high-res files even when the photo will appear on only half
of a book page.

2400 ppi is largely overkill...these images are generally not masterpieces,
and scanning times are long, while files are quite unwieldy. Resolution
should be determined by size of original...I'm usually happy with 600 ppi
for an 8 x 10, and 1200 for smaller sizes.

As for enlargements...the bigger the print size, the less resolution is an
issue. The vinyl image of 1711 and 14 that hangs on the front of the visitor
center was made from a 16 MB TIFF file from my very first digital camera. At
that print size, the eye is doing much of the work rather than the
photograph.

If I were in a different museum environment (art museum, for example), I
would be more accepting of the larger scan resolutions, but for trolley work
in general it eats up space and time.

Dennis

I scan at 4000 dpi in 8 bit color for color slides using a Nikon Scanner,
no longer available. File size is around 53MB. B&W prints are done at
16bit 1200 or 2400 dpi depending on photo size and detail. Large files for
sure ranging from 100 to 300 MB but I can zoom in and see lots of detail.
Scan images in original size as TIFF images. Hard drives are cheap.
