Well, so it's not all farms and forest. I should be a able to get to a few
places if I have any amount of free time.
I guess I didn't tell The List that I changed jobs back on January 20. I
had taken a lot of PA Civil Service tests last spring and did, of course,
get hired by Allegheny County Government. They use PA tests to fill their
Civil Service positions.
In October or November I received an "Availability Notice" from the PA
Department of Corrections for a job. I interviewed in December. I did not
like the way the interview went and figured they would lock the door to the
institution once I left so I could never get back in. However, I received a
call on January 3 and was told I was the candidate selected for the job.
On January 20 I began as the Assistant Librarian at the State Correctional
Institution at Pittsburgh. For those who know "old" Pittsburgh this was, in
the past, known as Western State Prison. My job is the administrative part
of running the library at SCIP. The Librarian, a kindly lady with a Masters
Degree, runs the library science end of things.
My job is known as a "contact job" inasmuch as I have direct contact with
the general inmate population. For this reason I have to attend the
Department of Corrections Training Academy in Elizabethtown. Also, this is
actually my second time working for the PA Department of Corrections. I was
a Corrections Officer at the State Regional Correction Facility at
Greensburg in the early 1980s. Back then the Training Academy was located
at the State Correctional Institution at Camp Hill, near Harrisburg. In
fact I was even given my former Commonwealth of PA Employee Number back. I
always have remembered that number as Brookline/Frankstown/Homeville. Those
six-digit numbers are now starting with 8.
I enjoy this job very much. Much more than the Allegheny County job. I get
paid a little more, have much better benefits and have excellent upward
mobility. Hopefully I can maintain my good health to let all this play out.
I'm hoping to make it to 100 so I may as well work and be happy. Sitting
around is not for me.
