There is still a manual elevator in Chicago, in the Fine Arts Building on 
Michigan, near the Art Institute.  I rode on it last Saturday.

It was built as the Studebaker Building, home to the Studebaker Carriage 
Company.  Manufacturing of the carriages was on the upper floors, showrooms 
on the lower floor.  They later moved to South Bend, where they built cars.

Very interesting building to visit, with many nice architectural features. 
Frank Lloyd Wright had a studio there.  Also home to the now closed 
Studebaker Theater.
