Subject: Fwd: [SFMuniHistory] Streetcars in D.C.

  Overhead trolley wire does not have to be massive and ugly. (As is in =
Pittsburgh) It can be almost invisible and with DC's many tree lined =
streets it does not have to be a deal killer for having trolley wire in =
central DC.

  From another list::

  As I said before the French and Spanish seamed to have mastered the =
minimalist philosophy and technology to have quality attractive =
overhead. By using this technology to build this type of overhead on the =
starter line where overhead is permitted as a "bell cow" it should be =
easy to get the law changed to allow this type of trolley overhead to be =
used with out allowing utility wire etc to be used. =20

  At least with present technology conduit, the Alstroum's switched =
center third rail or on board batteries are al much more expensive and =
do not work as well as plain old-fashioned simple trolley wire.

  Alan
