>> The 87 Ardmore is not listed on the downtown map; was it a shuttle from
Wilkinsburg to E. Pgh? <<

You are talking 1936, right? At that time, I think the 86 still ran via
Liberty Avenue, Centre to E. Liberty, thence Frankstown Road to
Wilkinsburg, the route later taken over by the 87.

>> The 95 Butler is listed but not the 94 Sharpsburg; was this a route
change that took place with the advent of PCC cars - dropping the 95 and
making the 94? <<

My (sort of) trusty 1930 map shows 94 running only from 62d Street,
connecting there with the 95 (and with the 96 to E. Liberty.) Later, the 95
became a short working of 94.

>> The 66 line on Forbes sounds vaguely familiar; was this just a Forbes
line? What was the outer terminal? <<

66 - Wilkinsburg via Forbes Avenue. IOW, a short working of 64.

>> For some cities, this kind of *routing* was common - crosstown routing
as opposed to dedicated radial <<

In fact, Pittsburgh was highly unusual in NOT having services running
through the CBD. And certainly unique in having a route named "Crosstown"
that didn't cross anything but the river. The 22/85 linkage at least made
the name honest.
