This reminded me that my mother once told me that the 40 Mt. Washington used
to end before it got to Shaler St. on Grandview Ave. She said that there
was a severe dip in Grandview at Shaler and the street cars couldn't handle
it. When they new cars (PCC) arrived they had to fill in the dip and raise
the end of Shaler St. Does anyone know? Did the 40 require double end cars
that turned back on the single track along Grandview before the advent of
PCCs?

By the way. . .
And if we want to stretch this out farther, who out there remembers when
Route 8 PERRYSVILLE also required double-end cars? The turnback point
was a crossover just north of Perrysville and East Streets. The line
was extended beyond the city limits into Ross Township after Keating Car
House opened in the 1920s.
