Interesting option. I don't know the current route numbers but Dormont
Shannon Village is the already established line so I thought that when Overbrook
is rebuilt that the Library line might use this straight thru. If I lived on the
Village line, I would transfer to the Library for a faster ride to downtown.
Many people stopped taking the Drake because it was more convenient to
drive to the Village and park and then take the Village line. If the
Library-Overbrook is much faster downtown, then maybe people will drive to Wash
Jct and park making the Village line OB of Wash Jct obsolete!
How many people actually ride transit for the purpose of going to the
Village? Bet the number is very small. Also, how many people board or alight at
stops between the Village and Wash Jct? Bet that number is very small, too. It
seems that the Village line would be more for the commuter - AM & PM rush.
Last time I rode a Pgh streetcar was 1984 when I was home on a visit. We
drove from Dormont to the Village and parked to catch the PCC. We had just missed
one and had to wait almost an hour for the next car! The ride was thru Overbrook.
While LRV frequency to/from the Village is probably much greater than 1984, I
wager it is not because of the demand for service between Wash Jct and the
Village. The demand comes from the rest of the line and the cars are just thru
routed to the Village.
