When I saw #1 in San Antonio in 1996, it was in rather poor shape. It
was down to one trolley pole as the wheel on the other had seized up and
been removed for repairs, a journal box cover had fallen off during the
time I was there, and it had a really battle trying to shove a single
albeit huge and heavy looking boxcar up the 7% grade. During the flood
of '98, the motors were damaged which necessitated the return of #2 to
service. The motors have since been repaired and installed. During the
installation, it was noted that two of the motors had been wired for one
direction and the other two for the other direction, so that only two
motors were working at a time.

So, does the PTM need another locomotive???
