77/54

I remember waiting at the 40th St. & Penn stop to head to the North Side
with my grandfather and only seeing the numbers "77/54" on the cars, no
destination. This was after 1962, so perhaps in some cases Pgh
Railways or PAT deleted the destination since the cars no longer ran to
Carrick after '62? There may have been a cardboard destination sign in
the window - I can't recall.
This route was without a doubt a fave of mine since it meant heading to
the North Side with my Pap to go to the Buhl Planetarium, the various
parks (one in which I remember sitting on a park bench while trains went
by - somewhere??) and to some place to get a milk shake. (this is
sounding awfully sentimental, but it is accurate!) Anyway, I can still
recall the whirring of the 77/54 PCC as it glided over the 16th Street
Bridge. That was the best! I think the tracks on that bridge must've
been newer or fairly well maintained as I don't recall too much
jarring. Memory tells me it was a smooth fairly rapid run.
What I do not recall is taking the 77/54 back home on these trips. We'd
catch a Crosstown into town, often to walk up to Brynes & Kiefer (a
distributor of produce) and head back on an 88 Frankstown. Now THERE
was a quick ride---->flying on Liberty Avenue smack dab against the
cement wall which guarded the PRR trackage next to Liberty.
If and when Transit Gloria Mundi does the "East End Lines" I'll be
watching for footage of the 88, 87, and 77/54 lines.
