The sealed beam lamps would only illuminate the 25 to 30 feet in front of the 
car. None of this light illuminated the area to the left or right side of the 
car. When on private right of way, with no street lamps, I found it safer to 
be able to have the area in front of and to the sides of the car illuminated. 
The ex-Navy lamps did a good job in allowing operators to see 100 or more 
feet in front of the car. These lamps also gave illumination to the left and 
right sides of the right of way. It was easy to see people standing at stops, 
kids hiding in the woods with rocks, and the occasional deer roaming the 
right of way. The brighter light also made the car more visible to motorists 
trying to beat the car to the next grade crossing. I am sure the night 
accident rate would have been much higher had the cars not been equipped with 
these lamps.
