I have a photo of 1692 on route 94. The car is outbound on the
Sharpsburg end of the bridge, and is clearly going DOWN the ramp after
rounding the curve near the main span of the bridge. The photo was taken
on 2/15/59 by Bill Gwinn, which means he even wrote the exact time of day
on the print...2:55 PM.
By the way, on 2/28/59, less than two weeks after Bill took the photo of
1692, I took a photo along the PRR tracks near the bridge. It is a photo
of some of the oldest pieces of railroad equipment that I ever
photographed - two open-platform 1860-era coaches lettered for the Union
Railroad. No one has ever had an explanation as to why these coaches
lasted 100 years (about 5X longer than the oldest PAT bus). The URR
coach photo can be seen on the Fallen Flags website
(www.dnaco.net/~gelwood) on the Union Railroad page.
And, old as the 62nd St. Bridge was, its roadway didn't come close to the
condition of the rickety deck on the old Glenwood Bridge.
