When it was working correctly there was a system of dwarf spacing signals on
the 42/38 tracks from just past SHJct (through the storage tracks) to, and
across, the Palm Garden Bridge. Speed had to be kept to around 15mph or a red
signal would show, indicating the car was being operated too fast. Also, only
one car was permitted between the dwarf signal 'blocks.' In, shall we say,
more modern times (the 1970s) this was the only signal system I knew of which
allowed only a set number of cars on a bridge at one time. Smithfield St.
Bridge had no mechanical signals, however had square markers (blank signs
painted white or silver) attached to the bridge. Only one car in each
direction was allowed between the markers at one time.
