Greetings!

	Gleanings From *Trolley Fare*
		October--1965

"A RIDER'S VIEWPOINT OF THE FANTRIP:"
	"SATURDAY 9/5 1965."

The author is not identified (might find the name in the article - pcw
- Peter Weiglein?) and because the article is 1.5 pages long, I shall
only partially quote and summarize. I was able to make this fantrip
even though only 2 of my 4-years with Uncle Sam and his Canoe Club were
completed!

"'a foine day fer a fyoonerul.'"

Apparently folks from Chicago, Philly, NY, and Washington attended the
trip. The author gives a different beginning from what I remember - he
has us heading to Craft immediately but I remember a trip to the North
Side first and then to Craft with 1640, in which I was riding, behind
M454. The author says: "Seems the trolley pole base was loose [on
M454], so pound a few more nails in the roofwalk to hold it together . .
." I was the one who spotted the loose base. I was sitting behind the
motorman on 1640 and noticed as M454 turned the corners, the trolley
base leaned considerably. I told the motorman so we pulled into Craft
for repairs. Have photos during the repair even! Have photos before
the trip began in the yard at SHJ and of course some photos from along
the way.

From this point on I agree with the description of the trip - at least
in part for I don't remember a return to the North Side. Out Forbes,
thru Braddock, around the trolley cloverleaf and onto the Rankin Bridge
and then we head up, up, up, up the 65 line with people lining the
streets everywhere! Anyone who could get on the cars was treated to a
ride!

Car 1470 was used for the night portion of the trip and 21-Fineview was
traversed and then 1470 followed the last scheduled 10 car outbound.
"East Street was deserted and the cars really rolled up this fine track
(and bad road), we hit route 8 at Perrysville, this line had a night
service and my of the group would be riding the last ever car
[8-Perrysville] outbound at 4.05 AM."

The group continued into Bellevue and turned around to follow the last
service car on 10/15 outbound, which was 1790. 1683 was the last car on
route 8.
