Still would opt for middle of winter based on experience looking for
Southern Cambria, West Penn, Oley Valley and Conestoga Traction. The circa
1915 county map series helps pin down where to look. And one thing that
doesn't move or return to nature readily are bridge piers. Easier to find
once leaves are down. Also helpful with eliminating encounters with crawly
critters. And a light powdering of snow helps bring out terrain highlights.
On other hand, still vividly recall a bitter January day beginning of this
year when Fred S., Elmer Fry and I very foolishly went out looking for
Ephrata & Lebanon right or way. Productive, but dumb. So yes, your right,
Jim. Can get too cold in January.
