This is NOT a question about color. I would like to know if this car

ever had red above the windows, if it was painted over, or if it just wore

All PRCo PCC's from 100 to 1799 had red letterboards when delivered --
the 4000's did not. This photo sbows a later paint job dating to the
late 50's or 60's. Incidentally, in the original color scheme, the
small band between the two circumferential trim "welts" below the
windows was painted cream, not red as shown, and the upper "welt" was
painted cream, the lower one black.
