Matt!
In the March--April--1992 *Trolley--Fare* pg.7 is what you were
asking about, and is listed under the heading of "25 Years Ago in
Trolley Fare," and I quote:
"March 1967, Vol. XIII, No.11:"
"A New York Times article headed 'Pittsburgh Acts to Drop Trolleys'
describes PAT's abandonment of the East End routes and ends with a
derisive comment from PAT head John Dameron:::::::"
"'Maybe they think that streetcars will stage a comeback.'"
And I checked the March issue of TF, Matt, but could not find the
article. But then, pg.2 of my copy is blank and I quote the following
from the April//May--1967 issue:
"As you may have noticed we had more than our share of problems in
printing the March TF."
Maybe part of the reason for combining Aprii//May!!
Checked other issues of 1967--TF but did not find anything about the
NY--Times article.
The January--1967 TF states:::::::
"The scrapping program grinds onward---sweepers M-18, 27, 36, 52 and
54 have bit the dust. In connection with the '90 Streetcars For Sale'
ad we ran the last time, the breakdown is as follows---20-1400s,
33-1500s, 10-1600s, and 27-1700s. Yes gang, all the GE 1700s are
slated to get the axe. If you'd like to bid on one, do so before
December 29 [1966]. Also on the way to the torch are sweepers M-31,
37, 38, 39, 40, 41 and 42. Highfloors M-452 and 459 are also
included."
This is from the front page, 5th paragraph.
Thus, the decision to get rid of the GE--17s was made in 1966. It was
stalled because of a possible sale to Boston, but that fell through.
There seemed to be some interest from Chicago and a couple other places
in purchasing unwanted PCCs from Pgh. Boston also looked at
ex-Birmingham cars in Toronto which were in much better shape, but we
now know nothing came of that, either!!
