Good evening!
Just wanted to retract something that I'd said last week in regards to
SF Muni motormen not using the back-up controls to, well, back up. I
took a look at the films that I shot back in the 70's and in the dozen
or so shots of PCC's backing at the various wyes, all of the motormen
were using the back-up controls. One even changed the poles. Could've
sworn that I'd seen some who didn't get out of their seat to back up,
but I'll trust the film more than my memory. My apologies to all Muni
motormen, living or dead, for casting aspersions upon their
professionalism.
The one thing that I was amazed at was how many PCC's were in each
downtown shot. Granted that all 5 lines used the same trackage on
Market Street, but there were between 6 to 12 PCC's in every shot, some
with 5 or 6 cars at the same stop. And this with only 105 PCC's in its
fleet. In all of the videos that I've seen of Pittsburgh with its
massive fleet, I've never seen half that many PCC's in any one shot.
