Was it put there for 

     1) noise reduction
     2) thermal insulation
     3) something else
     4) all of the above
	
I know it wasn't used on earlier air-cars because the center section of
the room was plywood covered with canvas and painted on the lower side.  

To what degree was it used on cars with steel roofs?
