Greasings!

The asbestos material...an asphalt/chrysotile matrix, had been applied
in a 10" swath around the periphery of the roof interior, and on the
cross members The material;s  .125 thickness is simiiar to, and looks
very much like an application of Ziebart undercoating found, and .
hardly a noise reduction application. More than likely, it's purpose was
to act as a flame retardant thermal barrier at the roof/sidewall apex in
case of fire.
 
Little doubt this application occurred prior to the mid-70's. Big
Brother had not proclaimed asbestos as a public health issue until 1976
when the EPA and OSHA got involved, and all the attorney's that ever
were, held a major 'Chop Licking' Convention
