Good Morning!

You may have to cut and paste the following URLs (they come from the
photos section of SFMuniHistory at yahoogroups.com) but the first one really
makes a point --- Actually, Underscores a point which I have already
made.
The first URL (4009 in front of 2133) in particular shows that the Pgh.
sealed windows are essentially the same identical Size as the windows on
other All-Electric PCCs with standee windows -- same as the Philly cars,
same as the Baby Tens, same as the St.Louis Public Service PCCs, same as
SF-Muni 1100s. But note that the Philly car has a guard post near the
bottom of each window which obscures the view even More!

Thus....... the Pgh. sealed windows allow for more viewing room and
pleasure than other cars!

Where should I send your Crow, Robert of Oz?!?!?!(:->)

==============================================

From pg.182 of *PCC From Coast to Coast* I quote from the first
paragraph:::::::

"PCC Cars 4000 through 4003 are, in common with Chicago's 6000-series
rapid transit fleet, NEW VEHICLES [emphasis added] that utilize a small
number of reliable but costly components salvaged from older equipment.
An equally good example would be the fleet of new cars built by Third
Avenue Railway System during the Depression. In Pittsburgh's case, the
rehabilitated parts came from 1949-vintage PCC cars of the 1700 series,
that have been scrapped since 1981. THE ACTUAL NUMBERS OF THE
SCRAPPED CARS ARE UNIMPORTANT BECAUSE THE BODIES WERE NOT
REUSED [emphasis added - again!]. Because of this fact, they differ
from the Boston and Philadelphia rehabilitation and overhaul efforts, which
retained the original car but replaced only corroded, rusted, or worn-out
parts. Unlike Chicago and like Third Avenue Railway, PAT did not contract
with a recognized car builder to build the four new cars; rather, they were
erected by the company in the South Hills Car House."

While patterned *after* the Pgh. 1700-series cars, the 4000s are Not
ex-1700-series cars but are new cars. This sets the 4000s totally apart
from the 1700s. This is not unlike Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis,
Philadelphia, St.Louis, and Toronto which placed more than one order for
All-Electric PCCs. While identical in all other respects, they are
separate orders of New Cars with different series of numbers.

Yes - a list of cars which *donated* parts is available, has been listed
here, and was posted by yours truly from information compiled by Dave
Hamley of the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum (PTM.) But the key word is
*donated* Parts, Not Bodies.

Yes - in San Francisco, the 4000s will receive a new number - but that
does not change their heritage or lineage - and these cars are ex-4000s,
Not ex-1700s.

And again....... -- Yes, this is a legal technicality but it is
necessary to dig thru all the minute and sometimes boring details to
determine status.

Thus my inclination to have either 4008 or 4009 painted as originally
painted (http://davesrailpix.railfan.net/pitts/jpg/pitt052.jpg). This
would be historically accurate while also honoring PRCo as this paint
scheme is a general rendering of PRCo paint, slightly modernized - just
like the New Car BODY (and electronics) are slightly modernized.

Admittedly, the SF Historical fleet is not Historically accurate
(ex-Philly All-Electric single-end St.Louis PCC with standee windows
painted to represent Pacific Electric, double-end, Pullman, Air-Electric
PCC sans standee windows!) But why not be historically accurate if
possible?!?!(:->)

This email contains a jpg attachment (00-rtfrn.jpg) for those lists able
to accept the same (those unable will have the attachment stripped.) This
is the very first 4000 which is -- 4000 -- out on a test run under
trolley pole.
