[PRCo] Re: THAT'S ALL, FOLKS

There's no shill and they're not upping their own price - a slew of bids in
a row by one bidder shows someone trying to get in a higher bid than exists
at the time, and often when they do get ahead (and I do this myself
occasionally) they lay in some backups (sometimes more than one) to "get a
message out to other bidders" that they've got the lead and plan on holding
it, at least up to what they feel is their maximum, or at least (to them) a
reasonable maximum. Thus when the next bidder tries to top the current
listed bid he might (likely will) find that he's just pushing the other guys
bid higher. If an item is popular bidding can be quite interesting,
especially if some raving loon (to use Ivor Walsh's favorite phrase) gets
involved, as has happened here and on a 1944 PRC map a few days ago. If you
wanna bid on eBay, better learn how it works or you'll get creamed. Often
bidders won't bid at all until the last minute, or even few seconds, then
come in and cream everyone with a bid so ridiculously high that they
automatically win. Those are bidders with more bucks than brains generally,
and who don't care what something costs as long as they get it. Yes, there
are those in this hobby who have big bucks.
