They may have been morons, but two of the Brits had PhD's. The content of
their presentations was sound, but they had a problem with verbs. I finally
decided that their speaking style was a quirk caused by choosing the verb,
then changing the subject, and sticking with the chosen verb. The result was
a bit like Bostonians adding the "r" sound between a word that ends with a
vowel and a word that begins with a vowel.
Anyway, to get back on topic - at least N.Y. public transit - I visited one
of the New York City Transit Authority stores in Manhattan and picked up
some maps (which are among the most helpful anywhere). Also bought some old
subway tokens and other NYCTA memorabilia being sold in the store.
