Good Morning!
There was a Trojan Horse (TH) type virus within the past week
that I received personally and also on a mail list.
Although I do not know the individual from whom the email
originated, I Did recognize the email address as a trolleycar
fan. The personal message came with a Subject and From line but
No 'To' line. There was an attachment that ended in '.com'
which *should* be safe. The body of the message was a joke which
didn't make sense!
Having never corresponded with this individual and because of
the above, I was immediately suspicious. When it turned up on a
mail list in a few minutes, I was even more suspicious.
I wrote the individual indicating that he was as much a victim
as the rest of us - the TH automatically sends messages to
everyone in the address book without the host knowing it.
'A' way to get around the TH is to insert an address entry at
the top of the address book *without* an email address - this
apparently stops the TH from using the rest of the address book
-- until the hackers who do this rewrite the TH code to get
around it. (I used all zeroes for the first and last names to
get the listing at the head of my address book.)
Haven't seen anything here which came from there but get an
oversupply of spam which could be virus as well - this is deleted
as rapidly as possible.
Considering a change in email address to delete unwanted email -
one possible way of diminishing virus incidents - won't eliminate
them.
Many Thanks, Ed, for taking time to issue the alert. Will keep
an eye out here.
