My only dependably operative typewriter is a 1920s Underwood. The 1970s IBM
Secectric at the office sometimes chooses to work, sometimes doesn't. Last
week I acquired (on behalf of the PTM Library) a Xerox typewriter with 12
print wheels and 3 instruction books. Whether it will be an improvement on
anything remains to be seen.
Do I like computers? Absolutely! Do they frustrate me? Absolutely! Do I
understand them? Of course not!

The sad thing today is that we need computers to survive. The developed
world no longer understands the concept of manual typewriters. I have
one electric typewriter in the house and I use it only once a year, to
fill in the 1099s and W2s for people who worked for the church during
the year.
There are times when I miss the simplicity, just like I miss my old
twin-lens reflex that was a knock off of a Rolleiflex. But then I also
appreciate a computer, in spite of its annoyances ("You have done an
illegal action; you should know you are not allowed to print the letter
you just wrote..."). I sometimes wonder how I survived without one.
