Hilton is wrong. The last train on the P&CS was run April 30 or May 1,
1912. PRCo rebuilt the line to double track in 1913.
I threw narrow gauge into the equation, I guess, by saying I doubted if
those tracks leading to the railroad's tunnel were broad gauge. That whole
loop was railroad track, and it would take some digging to find any
widening. PRCo may or may not have needed it. The track sketch books are
here, though, if anyone wants to come look!

I suppose all we can be certain of is that the ventilating towers were
built. So perhaps no earlier than 1923 or so. The truck would have
been well-seasoned by that time; OTOH there's no reason it couldn't still
have been operating in 1927.
I need to backtrack here: I'm not sure just how the question of narrow-gauge
entered the discussion. The map doesn't indicate track gauge,
and as far as I can see there is no narrow-gauge in the photo.
The lines Bob has traced in blue are contours, which I supposed he included
to indicate the hollow.
In 1923 the junction itself would have been a little less than two decades
old - in other words, fully-established. According to Hilton the
P&CS ceased operations in 1909, so it was long gone no matter the date of
the picture.
