The primary source of chromium was controlled by the Japanese, with whom we
were at war during 1941-1945. Chrome parts were not available ... Nickel
was also unavailable. Therefore any PCC cars built during the war or rebuilt
after accidents had painted steel in place of the brightmetals. The 1500s
and 1600s came with painted headlight trim and obviously no wings. The
stanchions inside the 1500s were gray painted carbon steel pipe.
