You are right.  In the 1950's I learned the following.

         Take off midnight return service, you lose the 4 PM ride to work

          Or take off the midnight ride to work, you lose the 8 AM ride home

          Take off Sat or Sunday service, you lose rides on weekdays to and
          from work.  3 days X 2 rides plus the weekend.

          This is what PRC was forced to do with some lines in the 1950's

Its all still true today.
