Greetings
Excellent and interesting comments.
In 1950, I did not go to work for the intercity bus line in
Batavia because it was a family business. In 1960, I did not
go to work for either Lincoln Coach in Irwin or Edwards in
Williamsport for the same reasons. Harmony turned out to be
different. None of the children or grand children were interested.
I am still a friend with Glick's son, Jim who is in the paper box
business.
The war years in New York were also interesting. Being a port
city, life was very diferent. I lived just a few blocks from where
the French liner Normandy capsized. I went down there that
afternoon after leaving the library on 42d Street at 5th Ave.
I followed the fire engines to the smoke!
The big war time event was in Penn Station on Sunday nights.
Many extra trains, many servicemen, big crowds. The PRR even
put wood seats in baggage cars, even in some MU combines!
I went to Penn Station almost every Sunday evening to watch.
I was also an air raid warden messenger, I had a helmet and a gas mask.
We had to turn the street lights out by hand when there was a blackout.
This was the first time I was ever fingerprinted atage 14. Our zone
was from 5th Ave to the River and included the Empire State Building, Penn
Station, Macy's. A man who later became a mentor was Frank Yelton,
Regional Mgr of Penn Greyhound who was sector commander.
He lived around the corner from me.
On Pearl Harbor Day, I had walked down to 23rd Street to the Terrace
Movie. After the show, I walked up 9th Ave and heard the first radio
reports. Quite an evening listening to the radio at home.
