The Northside rail is on Chestnut St., north of E. Ohio St. This was the
rail for routes 1 and 5, and it exists exposed and in good condition,
including turnouts (at least until recently) as far north as Spring Garden
Avenue. I believe that most of the rail for routes 1 and 5 north of that
point is still under the asphalt all the way out to the routes' loops.
Yes, a small section of rail in E. Ohio St. near Federal St. was left
exposed in the middle of the Allgheny Center complex when it was built
nearly 40 years ago. When Allegheny Center Mall opened in 1966, a friend
called it, "instant slum." Prophetic.
