Have often seen operators trade cars enroute to get back on schedule
(happened once at Park Blvd. on the 42-Dormont, 1.5 stops inbound of
the end of the line!!) But I have Never seen a car sitting at the
Dormont wye, Nor Clearview Loop, Nor Drake Nor Simmons Loops waiting
for an off-schedule car to be put back on time.

Round-trips on 42-Dormont were 1-hour Including Layover with cars
every 15-minutes mid-day weekdays at 09, 24, 39, and 54 after the hour
inbound. *Never* saw an idle car sitting at the end of the line.

And have been on Many A Car that was running behind schedule in Pgh
and most of those times they just ran it out! Maybe easier to do in
South Hills with Tunnel and all the prw.

When 1723 derailed at Bon Air OB on Mother's Day (1960--1962) an
operator at SHJ was assigned another interurban car to replace this
car which was sent around downtown first and then out the 38-line.
I have detailed that explanation here before. But a car was not
sitting online waiting for such an event. THAT would be extremely
expensive -- an extra car on each line just waiting for a
happening! Maybe it was used on certain street running lines where
it was known that traffic delays could really impact schedules.

Forcing all Runs to be stricly 8-hours is Not necessarily the
cheapest way to go --- overhead costs for Operators include
benefits and more drivers for 8-hour runs equals more costs than
paying *some* overtime. John might know of an equation to figure
the balancing point in this equation.

And an operator doesn't have to make 2-Round Trips depending on what
barn he is scheduled from. He could start his day by making a
relief inbound and end it by making the relief outbound. Even at
Washington, with reliefs possibly made at Tylerdale, this would knock
about 45-minutes time off a Run considering a 25-minute layover at the
downtown Interurban Station and then travel time to and from
Tylerdale!

I have a map which shows schedule times along the Interurbans (John
and Tom have copies of this map) and it shows the times cars are due
at each siding. Certain sidings show that both inbound and outbound
cars are scheduled identically but that doesn't mean that cars Don't
Meet at other sidings -- they just aren't scheduled there
identically.

Times are not listed for sidings at Overbrook,
but for CHARLEROI the timings are:::::::

Washington Jct, 00 30 OB -- 29 59 IB

Crookham 30 00 OB -- 30 00 IB

Riverview 34 04 OB -- 26 56 IB

Riverview Loop/Wye 36 06 OB -- 23 53 IB

Pine Street 38 08 OB -- 21 51 IB

7th Street 40 10 OB -- 20 50 IB

First Street 44 14 OB -- 16 46 IB

Summit 55 25 OB -- 05 35 IB

Lockview 00 30 OB -- 00 30 IB

Charleroi Car House 02 32 OB -- 58 28 IB

Fifth Street Siding 05 35 OB -- 55 25 IB

Allenport 18 48 OB -- 42 12 IB

Roscoe Loop 25 55 OB -- 35 05 IB

So, unless 2-cars were at Roscoe Loop most of the time (allowing for
40-minute layovers, cars here had only 10-minute layovers!

for  WASHINGTON  the timings are:::::::
