Greetings
There were some blacks at PRC but I dont know how many.
One was a fine gentleman Robert Fulton (known as steamboat!)
He was an operator and part time supervisor when PAT took over.
A year or two later, he came into the office to represent the Transportation
Dept on various corridor planning studies. He stayed and never went
back. He joined the planning department when I was Director of
Planning. He stayed more then 10 years. He did the entire Model City
10 cent loop bus in the Hill and Oakland. He later handled affirmative action for PAT
A very good guy. My mother and I visited with him and his wife Sophie
often. He passed away in the 1990's.
In the 1950's, the lower Hill was Jewish and Italian. There were blacks
in Glenwood, Homewood and some parts of the North side. The 1968
riots were along Centre Ave in the Hill and partially in Homewood.. Even so
my mother took the 82 Lincoln bus downtown from Shadyside in the
1970's. The Bedford bus and 5th Ave buses ran thru out the riots.
I was the senior non-unit National Guard officer at the time and I spent
my evenings and nights with Gov Shafer touring the city. By the way,
he was a good governor
