Nobody ever said the world was fair. My mother didn't. My dad was the most
liberal person I ever met UNTIL my sister came home with and later married a
Black man. Funny thing is (and I think EHL will agree), Don is one great person
and we sometimes have trouble saying the same thing about his wife. By the
way, Boris, we never did get rid of racial discrimination in the states ... its
just a few millimeters under the surface. Sadly, with some people it is most
visible. We legislated racial, ethnic and religious discrimination away just
like we attempted to control alcoholic consumption in 1918. We try to keep it
under control with court cases. But some people need to hate other people. I'm
100 percent convinced that if we had a totally homogenous society, then someone
would need to hate me because I painted my front door the wrong color.

I can understand why our immigration people won't give your visa application
money back ... they need it to pay for the salaries and wages of those who want
to prove they don't like you. After 36 years of government service, I'm a
committed cynic.

But, if you never try, you'll never get here. Same thing I say to people who
say, "Some day I would like to see Switzerland." Some day never comes unless
you dedicate yourself to the project. And if you get here you will find we are
the same as people any where else on the planet. Most of us are nice. Some are
mean spirited. You simply accept the nice ones and ignore the others.

I look forward to your visit.... Just give me enough advance notice so the
calendar can be arranged.
