Perhaps, Bob, by way of explanation: Port Authority of Allegheny County is
the official corporate name. The Pa. Dept of State uses terms such as
t/d/b/a (trading/doing/business/as) to describe an unofficial term by which
the authority is normally known.
In Pittsburgh's case, PAAC had a "Port Division" which received funds from
PennDOT for waterways development, and a "Transit Division". (this is where
we need Harold to correct my vague recollections). PAT was just a marketing
term used by the "Transit Division". But to expand on what Fred the third
mentioned, when Joe Grata mentioned "PAT" in his column, the public knew
what he meant.
My favorite that I deal with is: "Transportation and Motor Buses for
Public Use Authority d.b.a. Altoona Metro Transit (Amtran)"
It's really a nit-picking issue which I suspect the rest of you do not have
to deal with: Making sure that the correct corporate names (and addresses)
are used in contracts. It gets to be a real pain at times with small
transit providers.
By the way, is PAAC/PAT trying to get away from the term Port Authority
Transit? The website is www.ridegold.com and recent public items use the
slogen: PORT AUTHORITY- connecting people to life. (without the 'transit')
But for our generation it will always be known as PAT.
