Yes  --  1950s seemed quite popular for swimming channel  --  remember 
news of one of the first women so to do  --  not a few jokes about 
channel swimming amongst the kids of that time.

Cheeze Whiz  --  saw same on beaches in IL and WI  WithOut  the blanket 
covering!       Also downtown Portland along the River  --  probably 
same in Pgh, Philly, Beantown, Etc., Etc., Etc.
