I know that people swim in the English Channel. I've know that since I was 10. I've never seen all that
many people doing it ... not like the Atlantic Ocean beaches or the Pacific below Santa Monica. I've seen
them in the water near the Hague in wet suits. THAT WATER IS COLD.
Nudity. I'm aware. The first time I took Marie to San Francisco, we were walking across Aquatic Park.
Beautiful sunny Sunday afernoon. Kids were flying kites. Older people were sitting on the lawn reading
newspapers. Then Marie grabs me and pulls me away, saying , "We've got to leave." She hoarsely whispers
that our daughter can't see this. I turned pack and there was nothing unusual ... just two people under a
blanket ... not unusual except that the blanket was rythmically going up and down. When you live in a city,
privacy is at a premium. You take what you can get. Now that she is a grandma, she is a little more
willing to accept what others do.
