Because there weren't enough buses on hand to do it.

Subject: [PRCo] Route 53 and Route 75

Here a couple other Joe Testagrose photos that are currently on
alt.binaries.rail.
The first is a great sgot of route 75 Wilkinsburg gliding along Penn Avenue.

The second is a shot of route 53 coming up Warrington Ave on July 1,
1968. I guess this was shortly after the tracks on South 18th street
into the South Side were abandoned and what was route 47 Carrick via
Tunnel became known as 53 Carrick. There is a cardboard sign in the
window indicating that the car goes through the Tunnel and up
Warrington. I wonder why 53 Carrick as it was wasn't just retired as
a route when teh south 18th street tracks were abandoned, in favor of
instituting the rush hour 47 as a regular route?
