Guess I selected some bad wording here in saying "a narrow view
of the world". I was really looking for parochial, in that as a nation
we tend to think of everything from the American Point of View.
When I was in Australia I was forunate enough to live with
different families while I was there. Granted, the US and
Australia have a lot in common since we're both really
off-shoots of England. Still, in spite of what we have in
common - the daily matters of family, job, taxes, etc. -
the Australian had a broader view of the world. Their
newpapers carried news about the world on the front
page - ours have local news on the front. Most of the
families I stayed with (yes Fred, I stayed with mostly
college educated professionals) had traveled to other
countries at least once.
When in Europe I notice the same trends. Newspapers cover
the world, my employees traveled the world, and they were
aware of what was happening through out the world.
I've worked to keep myself informed about the world without
the "blinders" of the US media. I was very pleased when my
local PBS station offered BBC evening news - still a bias, but
a different one and a broader look at the world.
My whole point was not that as a nation we don't travel,
rather that as a nation we don't show interest in the world
as a whole. I could ramble about the narrow minded
news media, etc. But I think it's time to get back on
topic...
Yes I got to ride the Trams in Melbourne, the underground
in London and the Trams (think that's right) in Colone!
There - I did it!
Howard
