Later shots of the monorail in the news revealed what I had forgotten - 
Large inverted U shaped groove  (for lack of better term)  on the bottom 
of the mono prevents it from rolling off the El!

Apparently tolerances are close so that  i-f  it was a wheel which 
shattered it allowed the unit to stray enough for the sideswipe.       
Haven't heard of anything like this before  --  always a first time for 
anything // everything in an imperfect world.       Doesn't overly 
concern me  --  sounds like a freak accident.       Could it have been 
prevented through better maintenance?       Only an investigation can tell.
