This is an article that is published in the latest edition of "Lake
Shore Electric Journal", the newsletter for the group behind
Trollyeville U.S.A's relocation to Downtown Cleveland. It was mailed in
the middle of the week of September 26th:
Milestone Reached!
On July 13 Cleveland City Council passed the resolution authorizing the
City to enter into a lease with Lake Shore Electric Railway Project for
land to house a car barn. The land in question is at the east end of the
Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority's Waterfront Line, just
south of Marginal Road and the Municipal Parking Lots. It is a long
narrow plot that is ideal for a car barn large enough to house the
entire Trolleyville USA collection.
This resolution was the culmination of a long process working with the
City Administration to identify an area that met our technical
specifications and was accessible to RTA lines. This will enable us to
move the collection throughout the city. The lease will be for 25 years
at the favorable rate of one dollar a year.
Previously several from Council came out to Trolleyville to ride the
cars and hear in detail about the proposed project to bring the
collection to Cleveland. We tried to meet with as many of City Council
people as possible to introduce this project and ensure support. All
representatives that we talked with were excited about the potential of
this project and wanted to actively support it. In particular,
Councilman Matt Zone made sure to speak in favor of the project in
session and Councilman Martin Sweeney expressed City Council's
appreciation to the Brookins Family for working so hard to keep this
treasure in the Cleveland area.
We now need to perform test borings to determine what kind of foundation
this building will need along with other engineering studies. Most
importantly we need to start raising the funds for this activity and for
the actual construction of the car barn. We are in discussions with
Congressman LaTourette and the City Administration on how to make this
happen. However, the first step is to show strong community support
through donations from those who believe in bringing streetcars back to
Cleveland.
